Common Furnace Problems: Pilot Lights

When the furnace in your home turns on, gas travels to the burner, where the pilot light is located. The pilot light then ignites the gas, producing a flame. Pilot light flames are small and should always burn blue in your furnace. • What should I do if my pilot light goes out?

Pilot lights can go out in a variety of ways and are a common problem. In most cases, pilot lights blow out because of a buildup of lint or dust in the furnace.

To reignite your pilot light, remove any dust buildup by firmly blowing on the pilot light area.

Then, use a long match to relight the pilot.

Another cause for furnace pilot light issues could be that the setting of the pilot light adjustment is too low. The pilot light should be adjusted for a pilot flame of two inches. If the adjustment is correct and the flame will not light, check to ensure that the nut of the thermocouple is tightly secured.
